Bye bye traditional batteries. Here comes the Super-Capacitor!

New type of electrolyte could enhance supercapacitor performance
[and replace traditional batteries!]
Sounds very promising: Using the new electrolyte, future supercapacitors may even be able to store more energy than batteries, he says, potentially even replacing batteries in applications such as electric vehicles, personal electronics, or grid-level energy storage facilities.

Perhaps surprisingly, plants do well under solar panels!

Solar and agriculture - some plants thrive under solar panels and the panels benefit as well: win-win

"under the panels is much cooler in the summer and stays warmer in the winters. This not only lessens rates of evaporation of irrigation waters ... it also means that plants don't get as stressed out."

A range of crops perform well in this cooler, shaded, environment.

Basil plants produce larger leaves, kale leaves are longer and wider, and chard leaves are larger. This is key for these crops because farmers harvest the leafy parts of these plants.

The evaporation of water from the crops creates localized cooling, which reduces heat stress on the panels overhead and boosts their performance. In short, it is a win-win-win at the food-water-energy nexus.

At harvest: "We raised the panels so that they were about 3 meters (10 feet) off the ground on the low end so that typical tractors could access the site."

They want to experiment with solar panels that can be moved to completely vertical positions, allowing tractors to move through the rows of panels to get to the soil and crops without having to elevate the panels at all.

Solar panels cast shade on agriculture—in a good way

Ultra sensitive ultrasound to revolutionise technology.

A new and extremely sensitive method of measuring ultrasound could revolutionise everything from medical devices to unmanned vehicles.

Amazing: Researchers at The University of Queensland have combined modern nanofabrication and nanophotonics techniques to build the ultraprecise ultrasound sensors on a silicon chip. It can hear, for the first time, the miniscule random forces from surrounding air molecules. "We'll soon have the ability to listen to the sound emitted by living bacteria and cells".
